擬石蓮花一直是很多喜愛多肉植物者的第一選項，品種相當的多，但細究下來，原生種就是160多，要研究擬石蓮屬，首先就是要研究原生種。對原生種的描述，大多是根據金那許於2003年在Illustated Handbood of Succulent Plants中的描述，我嘗試將其翻譯出來，請大家多多指教。

多年生多肉，光亮到有毛。根部具纖維化或塊莖。莖部：缺乏、明顯並高，常有分支。
Perennial succulents, glabrous to hirsute; Root fibrous or tuberous, stem none or conspicuous and tall, usually branching;

蓮座緊密、分散或缺乏
Rosette compact, diffuse or lacking;

葉片：交替、玫瑰形到分散長在莖部，部分膜性到高肉質，鬆散到堅固的連接到莖部，葉形：線性到近圓形，但通常披針到倒披針形，葉端銳形到鈍形，通常具有尖突，葉面下方通常圓滑或有龍骨，上方凹、平、凸，通常覆有白粉或深色，有時容易掉落，發根，或形成新植株。
Leaves alternate, rosulate to scattered along the stem, submembranous to highly fleshy, loosely or firmly attached, linear to nearly orbicular but usually lanceolate or oblanceolate, acute to obtuse, usually mucronate, lower face rounded or keeled, upper face concave, flat or convex, often glaucous or highly coloured, sometimes easily falling, rooting and forming new plants;

花序：側邊生長， 穗狀花序，總狀花序，或聚繖─圓錐花序帶有一到多個蠍尾（分支上帶有交替的花），開花梗上帶有多個苞葉，形狀像正常的葉片，但比較小些。
Inflorescence lateral, spicate, racemose, or cymose-paniculate with 1 to several cincinni (Branch with alternately arranged Fl), flowering stem with numerous Bra similar in shape to the normal L but smaller;

Pedicel nearly lacking to long, usually with 1 to several minute bracteoles;

萼片，數量5，反折到緊貼但通常會有點開展，大小不等，裂開到基部。
Sep 5, reflexed to appressed but usually somewhat expanding, unequal in size, divided to near base;

花冠：圓柱到五角
Corolla cylindrical to pentagonal;

花瓣：數量5，鱗片狀（在Valvatae系列中邊緣無重疊），頂部稍微擴大，顏色從白到黃和橘到紅，內面通常是黃的，底部帶有花蜜腔。

Petal 5, imbricate (valvate in Ser. Valvatae), expanding slightly only near tip, colour varying from white through yellow and orange to red, inner surface usually yellow, usually with a nectar-cavity at the base;

雄蕊：內含，數量10，5個連接在花蜜腔的上方，5個連接在花瓣之間的花冠管的上方
Stamen included, 10, 5 attached to the Pet at the top of the nectar-cavities, 5 attached at the top of the Cl-tube between the Pet; 

花絲：錐狀，平躺
Filament subulate, flattened;

心皮：數量5，基部融合，花期會挺立，每一個基部都一蜜腺鱗片。
Carpel 5, united basally, erect at anthesis, each with a nactar scale at the base;

花柱：纖細
Style slender; 

柱頭：微小
Stigma minute;

果實：成熟時濾泡廣泛性分歧
Fruit follicles widely divergent at maturity; 

種子：卵形─ 梨形體，微細，平滑或網狀
Seed ovoid-pyriform, minute, smooth or reticulate.

細胞學：染色體數目相異甚大，單倍體的個數從12到34，多倍體個數從28到250.
Cytology: Extremely diverse in number of chromosomes, with every haploid number from n = 12 through 34 and with polyploid numbers from 28 to 250.
